During the summer before his senior year at Columbia University, Sam Steele, stoned out his mind, nearly jumps to his death off a desert cliff. He did not jump. But he did shatter.

Following this near-death experience, more chaos ensues. Family troubles, a break-up, an illicit affair, rock stardom, and eventually a nomadic trip across country all propel him on a memorable journey toward an Appalachian cliff, where he must once again, and for a final time, choose between what his life will or will not be.
